Downstream area of Oura River

Downstream area of Oura River

This photo is taken halfway up the Oura River looking downstream. The street light was particular to the foreign settlement. The bridge downstream is Benten Bridge and the mountain on the other side of Nagasaki Port is Mt. Inasa. A boat called ‘sanpan’, used to fetch goods from the ships offshore, is moored. The area, ‘Sagarimatsu’, was named after the pine tree on the left. The roof of Myogyoji Temple is barely discernable. The Sagarimatsu area was the foreign settlement’s town center with a bar for foreigners, a restaurant, an inexpensive international hotel, and a shop selling goods for foreigners and until around 1900, the place for locals to socialize.==Date:about 1874, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Ueno Hikoma?, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images)

This is a view from Mt. Kazagashira looking over the city centre and harbour. Land reclamation has progressed in the Shinchi area, and new buildings are being erected. But the old stone embankments still remain. Dejima Island and Dejima Bridge are visible along with Shin-Ohashi Bridge (built in 1869) and a white Western-style residence in Tsuki-machi. The date is 1871or 1872. War vessels and ships are anchored in the Nagasaki Harbour, and the Akunoura shipyard and Inasa area are visible on the opposite shore.==Date:1873, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:Uchida Kuichi , (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number114‐31‐0]

Kite Flying at Mt. Kazagashira

This was probably taken by a professional photographer to depict the sport of kite flying. The date is around 1895. The name of Mt. Kazagashira ( Wind Peak ) is derived from the wind that blows up the mountain from the city. Kite flying is enjoyed in March and April. The central part of Nagasaki city is visible beyond the mountain. The mountain in the distance is Mt. Inasa. The area of modern-day Nagasaki Station (yet to be reclaimed from the harbour) and part of Chikugo-machi are visible.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number109‐6‐0]

After Putyatin and his squadron of four Russian ships landed here in 1853, the Inasa area was used frequently by Russian visitors. This hotel was opened in November 1893, and the commander and staff of the Russian Far East Fleet participated in the ceremony. Nagasaki Harbour is visible in the background, with the downtown area, Mt.
